A Connecticut probate judge sided with the widow of a man who disappeared while on a Mediterranean cruise, saying that the settlement she reached with the cruise line was reasonable and should not be overturned.
George A. Smith IV disappeared from a balcony while on a honeymoon cruise with his fiancee, Hagel Smith, in the Mediterranean on July 5, 2005. His body was not recovered. The incident sparked a furor over cruise ship safety, prompting Congressional hearings and legislation. Smith’s family, however, took issue with Hagel’s settlement deal with the Royal Caribbean cruise line. The settlement in question awarded Hagel $1.1 million and access to ship records. Smith’s family sued in probate court, wanting their son’s estate to pursue a wrongful death suit against Royal Caribbean.
