A North Carolina attorney was awarded $1 million in legal fees for representing a wealthy widow in a probate battle, despite being unlicensed to practice law in the state of Florida.
William West, a solo practitioner in Winston-Salem, N.C., represented Carla Morrison during a probate case in 2004-5. Morrison, who was awarded over $30 million in assets as a result of West’s work, filed a legal complaint against him in 2005, seeking to void his legal fees.
Palm Beach Circuit Judge Jeffrey Winkoff ruled that there was no reason that West was not entitled to fees for his work, and commented that Morrison’s conduct during the legal proceedings was despicable. Morrison, who abruptly fired West the day before her probate judgment was to be confirmed, was ordered to pay out some $1.15 million in legal fees after interest.
